The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, following a fatal stampede at a children’s carnival she organised in Ibadan.
The tragedy occurred on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at the Islamic High School, Bashorun.
In a statement, police spokesperson Adewale Osifeso revealed that eight individuals had been detained in connection with the incident. Among those arrested are Silekunola, 31, and Fasasi Abdulahi, the 56-year-old principal of the school. Others include Genesis Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisolaja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimilehin, aged between 25 and 52 years.

“The Oyo State Police Command sympathises with all the families and loved ones affected by the tragedy,” Osifeso said, extending condolences on behalf of the command.
The stampede has sparked widespread concern, with residents demanding stricter safety protocols at large gatherings, particularly those involving children. The tragedy has reignited discussions about event management and the need for adequate precautions to prevent future occurrences.
