Nigerian Community Outraged as Brutal Murder of 37-Year-Old Julius Chukwunta Highlights Rising Concerns Over the Safety and Dignity of Foreign Nationals in South Africa.
The Nigerian community in South Africa is reeling from the alleged murder of 37-year-old Julius Chukwunta, who was attacked by four South African nationals on December 7, 2024.
Chukwunta, originally from Aninri Local Government Area in Enugu State, Nigeria, was reportedly ambushed near his home in Midrand Protea Estate. The attackers allegedly blocked his vehicle, forcing him to seek refuge at the estate’s security office.
However, instead of finding safety, Chukwunta was reportedly assaulted by the group, sustaining severe head injuries. According to the Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA), neither the estate’s security team nor residents intervened during the attack.
A Call for Justice
Speaking on the incident, NICASA President-General Dr. Frank Onyekwelu expressed outrage at the inaction of bystanders and the estate’s security personnel.
“It’s appalling that no one stepped in or even contacted emergency services,” he said.
Chukwunta’s female companion, who witnessed the assault, reportedly sought help from the security office but was ignored. She later contacted her father, who, with the help of family members, rushed Chukwunta to Tembisa General Hospital.
Despite being placed on life support, Chukwunta succumbed to his injuries three days later, on December 10, 2024.
Suspects Arrested, But Bail Sparks Outrage
The attack was reported to Midrand Police Station, leading to the arrest of four suspects, aged between 20 and 28. They were charged with murder and arraigned at the Alexandra Magistrate Court on December 13, 2024.
During a hearing on December 18, 2024, three of the suspects were granted bail at R10,000 each, sparking widespread condemnation from the Nigerian community. The fourth suspect did not apply for bail, and the case was adjourned to February 3, 2025.
“Nigerian Lives Matter” – NICASA
NICASA has pledged unwavering support for Chukwunta’s family and is determined to ensure justice prevails.
“The Nigerian community in South Africa is heartbroken and angry,” Onyekwelu said. “This isn’t just about Julius—it’s about the dignity and safety of every Nigerian in South Africa.”
The association is calling for stricter measures to protect foreign nationals and urging authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable.

The case has reignited discussions about xenophobia and violence against foreign nationals in South Africa. Chukwunta’s tragic death is a grim reminder of the urgent need for systemic reforms to ensure the safety of all residents.
