Brazil assumed the BRICS presidency on January 1, 2025, succeeding Russia. Nigeria now joins Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan as the ninth partner country under the category introduced at the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan in October 2024.
Abuja, Nigeria – The Brazilian government has officially announced Nigeria’s admission as a partner country in the BRICS bloc, a significant step in strengthening cooperation between Global South nations.
In a statement released by Brazil’s Foreign Ministry on Friday, it was highlighted that the bloc and Nigeria share mutual interests in advancing South-South collaboration and advocating for the reform of international organizations.
“Nigeria, with the world’s sixth-largest population and Africa’s largest, is one of the continent’s leading economies. The country’s active role in South-South cooperation and its commitment to reforming global governance align closely with the priorities of BRICS under Brazil’s presidency,” the statement read.
