Nigeria to Introduce Contactless Passport Application for Diaspora in Europe
In an announcement made on Tuesday, Mrs. Kemi Nanna Nandap, Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), revealed plans for the launch of a contactless passport application solution aimed at assisting Nigerians living in Europe. The initiative will be coordinated from the UK, with the official launch slated for February 7, 2025.
Nandap explained that this new system will allow Nigerians in the diaspora to conveniently apply for and renew their passports online from their homes, thus simplifying the often cumbersome application process. “This innovative solution is aimed at streamlining the passport renewal process, saving time, and minimizing the expenses related to travel for application purposes,” she stated.
It is important to note that this service is intended specifically for passport renewals and not for new applicants or minors. Nigerians abroad will be allowed to begin their passport renewal applications up to a year prior to the expiry date.
The Comptroller General praised the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) for their unwavering partnership in raising awareness about NIS programs and policies that impact Nigerians living overseas. She emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated an enhanced focus on improving the experience of Nigerians in the diaspora. In line with this directive, Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has also approved the establishment of a passport processing center in New York, aimed at addressing the backlog of applications and enhancing services in the area.
Nandap indicated that additional passport processing offices would be opened in various locations across the United States and other countries in the near future.
In her response, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson and CEO of NiDCOM, lauded the initiative, highlighting its alignment with the commission’s goal of facilitating engagement with the diaspora. “The introduction of the contactless passport application solution in Europe marks a significant advancement in the management of travel documents for Nigerians living overseas. NiDCOM remains committed to supporting, monitoring, and collaborating with the NIS to ensure the successful implementation of this initiative,” she stated.
Dabiri-Erewa also acknowledged the efforts of the Interior Minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Comptroller General for their innovative approach, noting that the contactless application process has already garnered positive feedback from Nigerians in Canada.
