Finland Opens Portal for Seasonal Work Permit Applications for 2025

Finland has announced the opening of a new portal allowing Nigerians and other foreign nationals to apply for its Seasonal Work Permit for 2025. This permit enables foreign workers to contribute to Finland’s labor market, particularly in the tourism and agriculture sectors. The Finnish government has outlined specific criteria for applicants, including the necessity of holding a valid job offer from a Finnish employer.

According to reports from TravelBiz, the Seasonal Work Permit is designed to facilitate compliance with labor laws while allowing foreign workers to join Finland’s workforce. Applicants must ensure they secure the appropriate work permit prior to their travel.

There are two primary categories of seasonal work permits outlined by Finland. Individuals applying from visa-required countries must obtain a seasonal work visa at a Finnish embassy before departing. Conversely, those from visa-exempt nations can apply directly for a certificate for seasonal work through the Finnish Immigration Service.

For employment durations ranging from three to nine months, a residence permit for seasonal work is mandatory prior to entering Finland. The processing period for applications is approximately 90 days.

To qualify for a seasonal work permit, candidates must possess a job offer accompanied by a signed employment contract with a Finnish employer. Furthermore, seasonal workers are expected to earn a minimum monthly wage of N2.2 million (around $1,430), unless otherwise stipulated in the employment agreement. Additionally, applicants must organize accommodation that complies with Finland’s health and safety standards.

All applications require essential documentation, including a valid passport, signed contracts, and proof of accommodation. Applicants must choose between applying for a seasonal work visa lasting about three months or a residence permit for seasonal work valid for three to nine months. They are also required to pay application fees and can track the status of their applications via the Finnish Immigration Service’s official website.

This initiative comes on the heels of similar programs launched by Germany and Australia to attract skilled workers from Nigeria. Germany has introduced an opportunity card—a type of residence permit enabling skilled Nigerians from non-European Union (EU) countries to relocate and search for employment. This card is valid for up to one year and can be renewed upon securing a qualified job.

Simultaneously, the Australian government has unveiled various work visa programs aimed at attracting skilled professionals globally, including Nigerians. The Skills in Demand (SID) visa program provides a direct pathway for skilled workers to obtain sponsorship and temporary visas. To be eligible for Australian immigration, candidates must meet the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), which includes over 456 professions in high demand across vital sectors such as healthcare, engineering, technology, education, and trades. A minimum salary threshold of AUD 73,150 (approximately N70.2 million) is required for applicants.

Prospective job seekers aiming to apply in Australia are advised to conduct thorough research, evaluate visa opportunities, and emphasize their qualifications and experiences to enhance their applications.
