Anambra Governor Addresses Noise Pollution from Roadside Preachers
In a firm statement, Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has warned roadside preachers against the use of loudspeakers in public areas, particularly in markets. He accused these individuals of contributing to noise pollution and disturbing local residents.
Governor Soludo emphasized that violators of the state’s noise pollution regulations could face fines of up to ₦500,000. His comments came after a viral video surfaced online, showing him confronting an unidentified preacher in a market setting.
Addressing vendors at what is believed to be Ochanja Market in Onitsha, the governor stated, “If you wish to preach the word of God, please do so in your church. You are creating noise pollution here and disrupting everyone around you.” He suggested that preachers should conduct their sermons in churches or rent open fields, emphasizing that those who wish to listen will find them there.
“This is a marketplace, not a church,” he continued. “You are in violation of the law by occupying public space in this manner. If you do not comply, you may be charged for using this area improperly. You will incur a fine of ₦500,000 because we are serious about addressing this issue.”
Soludo reiterated the government’s stance on prohibiting loudspeakers in markets due to the detrimental effects of noise pollution on community health. He added, “People should not be compelled to listen to your preaching while they are shopping. We are actively working to eliminate the presence of fraudulent pastors and prophets in Anambra.”
