Oluremi Tinubu Honored as Best Woman of the Year at Independent Awards 2024
Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has been honored with the Best Woman of the Year award at the Independent Awards 2024, dedicating the accolade to the women and youth of Nigeria for their relentless efforts toward the nation’s advancement. The award was presented during the Independent Awards 2024 Gala Night, which took place on Saturday in Lagos.
Represented by Fatima Tajudeen, the wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tinubu acknowledged the countless contributions of Nigerian women and youth, referring to them as the country’s unsung heroes. During her acceptance speech, she expressed her gratitude towards the Independent Newspaper board for the esteemed recognition, stating, “I receive this prestigious award with deep appreciation.”
Tinubu emphasized that this commendation would further motivate her commitment to national progress, thanking the event organizers for the honor.
In related news, Chief Olabode George, a leader within the Peoples Democratic Party in the South-West, urged President Bola Tinubu to address the ongoing crisis in Rivers State before it spirals further. As the chairman of the event, George highlighted the strategic importance of the state to Nigeria’s economy, warning that worsening unrest could lead to national instability, and drawing parallels to past civil unrest experiences from Maiduguri to Port Harcourt.
George also commended the Independent Newspaper for their initiative in celebrating Nigeria’s achievers, proclaiming that everyone left the event smiling, a sentiment he hopes the government will replicate for the citizens of Nigeria. He raised concerns about the general unhappiness in Nigeria and called for tangible improvements as the mid-term mark approaches in May 2025.
“My party is preparing to take over in 2027. The question for voters is: Are you better off now than before?” George asserted.
The gala honored thirty-six individuals, organizations, and leaders for their significant contributions to Nigeria’s development. Among the recipients, Governor Seyi Makinde was named Independent Man of the Year, while Chief Bisi Akande received the Lifetime Achievement Award 2024. Other notable awards went to Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra for Governor of the Year 2024 (Urban Renewal) and Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River for Economic Transformation. Additionally, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State was acknowledged as the Governor of the Year 2024 (Solid Minerals Development), alongside Governor Hope Uzodinma.
In the entertainment sector, Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori, popularly known as Kiekie, was recognized as the Social Media Influencer of the Year for her notable impact on the industry. The business field also saw accolades for prominent figures including Otunba Mike Adenuga, Chairman of Globacom, along with Charles Odi, DG of SMEDAN, and Prof. Abayomi Fasina of FUOYE.
