Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has revoked the right of occupancy for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretariat land in Abuja over non-payment of ground rents.

A revocation notice dated March 13, 2025, and signed by Chijioke Nwankwoeze, Director of Land Administration in the FCT, cited the party’s failure to pay its statutory fees for nearly two decades.

The notice, titled “Notice of Right of Occupancy with File No: MISC 81346 in Respect of Plot No: 243 within Central Area District, Abuja,” referenced the PDP’s failure to settle annual ground rents from January 1, 2006, to January 1, 2025.

According to the letter, the minister acted under the powers vested in him by the Land Use Act No. 6 of 1978, Cap. L5, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004. The decision followed multiple public notices by the FCT Administration since 2023, urging property owners to clear outstanding ground rent payments.

“This revocation is due to the continued contravention of the terms and conditions of the Right of Occupancy, as the PDP National Secretariat has failed to meet its financial obligations on the property for 20 years,” the letter stated.

The FCT Administration had earlier revoked over 4,700 land allocations in Abuja as part of efforts to enforce compliance with land regulations and recover debts owed to the government.

The decision to revoke the PDP secretariat land is likely to spark political debates, especially as Wike, a former governor and PDP stalwart, now serves in the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government.

With the revocation, the opposition party may need to seek legal redress or alternative office space, as the land in question houses its national headquarters in the capital city.
