Matawalle urged all stakeholders to cooperate with the federal government’s efforts, expressing optimism that the emergency rule would pave the way for lasting peace and good governance in Rivers State.
Abuja, Nigeria – The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s decision to impose a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing the need to restore political stability and uphold democratic governance.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the Ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Matawalle emphasized that the move was crucial in addressing the escalating political crisis that has hindered governance and security in the state.
The minister particularly pointed to the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex, an action he attributed to Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He argued that the absence of a functioning legislature for over fourteen months has deepened the political deadlock, making emergency intervention inevitable.
“The destruction of the Assembly complex has worsened the impasse and prevented effective governance,” Matawalle stated, adding that the Supreme Court’s recent ruling reaffirmed the constitutional necessity of a legislative arm in the state.
The minister also raised concerns over reports of vandalism and threats from militant groups, stressing that the federal government remains committed to safeguarding lives and infrastructure.
“In light of the situation, the Nigerian military is on high alert to protect government assets and ensure public safety. Any attempt to disrupt order or attack public facilities will be met with decisive action,” the statement read.
Matawalle urged all stakeholders to cooperate with the federal government’s efforts, expressing optimism that the emergency rule would pave the way for lasting peace and good governance in Rivers State.
