Former Bodyguard of Diego Maradona Arrested for False Testimony in Medical Negligence Trial
In a significant turn of events on Tuesday, Julio Coria, the former bodyguard of the late football legend Diego Maradona, was arrested for allegedly providing false testimony during the trial of seven medical professionals accused of criminal negligence in connection with Maradona’s care. An AFP reporter observed Coria being led out of the courtroom in handcuffs in San Isidro, a suburb of Buenos Aires, after a judge upheld the prosecution’s assertion that he had perjured himself.
Maradona passed away on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60 while recuperating at his home after undergoing brain surgery to address a blood clot. His death followed a long struggle with cocaine and alcohol addiction that plagued him for years. The seven-member medical team is currently facing trial for what prosecutors have described as a “horror theater” regarding the treatment Maradona received in the critical days leading up to his death.
The football icon succumbed to heart failure and acute pulmonary edema, a condition characterized by an excess of fluid in the lungs, just two weeks post-surgery.
Coria, who administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to Diego at the rented property where the footballer was residing near San Isidro, stated during the trial that he had not communicated with Leopoldo Luque, Diego’s personal physician who is among the defendants. However, investigators uncovered a series of text messages exchanged between Coria and Luque before and after Maradona’s passing, contradicting his claims.
