Justice Department Disrupts Terrorist Funding by Seizing $201,400 in Cryptocurrency Linked to Hamas
In a significant move against terrorist financing, the Department of Justice has confiscated approximately $201,400 in cryptocurrency that was earmarked to support Hamas, effectively dismantling a current funding operation for the organization.
The seized funds were identified as being linked to addresses associated with Hamas-controlled fundraising efforts, which have successfully laundered over $1.5 million in virtual currency since October 2024.
“At the direction of Attorney General Pam Bondi, the Department of Justice is dedicated to dismantling Hamas using all available resources,” stated Sue J. Bai, who leads the National Security Division at the Justice Department.
“These seizures demonstrate our office’s commitment to locating every penny intended to finance Hamas, regardless of its location or format,” emphasized U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr.
The investigation was spearheaded by the FBI, which meticulously tracked the flow of funds through various cryptocurrency addresses and exchanges. “Breaking down financial networks and seizing cryptocurrency linked to Hamas is one of the many strategies the FBI employs to combat terrorism,” remarked David J. Scott, Assistant Director of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division.
The authorities confiscated several assets, including cryptocurrency wallets valued at roughly $89,900 and three accounts containing $111,500. These accounts were registered under Palestinian individuals based in Turkey and other regions.
The investigation was carried out by the FBI‘s Albuquerque Field Office, the Counterterrorism Division, and the Cyber Division.
