Controversy Erupts Over Crossdresser Bobrisky’s Alleged VIP Treatment in Prison
Fresh allegations have surfaced following the incarceration of renowned crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, as a traditional leader in Lagos accused officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service of facilitating a bribery scheme that allowed the socialite to receive preferential treatment during his imprisonment.
Chief Babalola Shabi, the Baale of Kirikiri Town, also known as “Baale No-Nonsense,” claimed that Bobrisky smuggled eight Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards into the Kirikiri correctional facility. These cards facilitated the transfer of N35 million through local Point of Sale (POS) operators, allegedly to bribe prison officials for special treatment.
Shabi made these startling allegations during a town hall meeting hosted by the Lagos State Police Command as part of the National Police Week events. He asserted that Bobrisky did not serve his sentence within the confines of the prison but instead resided in an off-site apartment, allegedly orchestrated by complicit prison officials.
“Before the truth came to light, many believed Bobrisky was serving his time in Kirikiri. However, the reality is that he was living comfortably outside the prison walls due to a criminal partnership with some officials,” Shabi stated.
The traditional ruler took credit for exposing the scandal, revealing that he had summoned all POS operators in the community to his palace, which led to the intervention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). “I personally contacted the EFCC after calling the POS operators, which helped them trace the transactions and uncover the money trail,” he explained.
Shabi highlighted that the convoluted scheme involved correctional officers recruiting POS vendors to withdraw cash using Bobrisky’s ATM cards. “It was astonishing how quickly N35 million could be raised around here. This was clearly a coordinated effort, not a solo operation. The officials who aided him have now been suspended,” he added.
Furthermore, he revealed that the property where Bobrisky was allegedly held during his so-called imprisonment has been identified and demolished. Both the Department of State Services (DSS) and the EFCC have reportedly questioned him regarding the matter. “I was first invited by the DSS, and I disclosed everything I knew. The EFCC also approached me, and I fully cooperated. As a community leader, I refuse to allow such impunity to go unchallenged,” Shabi stated.
These claims contradict a previous report from a National Assembly panel, which indicated that while Bobrisky did receive favorable treatment, he remained within the prison premises throughout his sentence. The crossdresser was sentenced to six months in 2024 for reportedly abusing the naira and was released in August of the same year.
Adding to the controversy, outspoken social critic Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, shared a voice note allegedly from Bobrisky in which he claimed to have paid N15 million to certain EFCC officials to have money laundering charges against him dropped. In the audio, Bobrisky also mentioned a “godfather” who, along with members of the Nigerian Correctional Service, arranged for his six-month sentence to be served in a private apartment rather than behind bars.
