Wike Hosts Suspended Rivers Lawmakers in the UK Amid State of Emergency
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, recently welcomed a group of suspended lawmakers from the Rivers State House of Assembly during their visit to the United Kingdom. This gathering took place on Monday and was revealed through a post by Lere Olayinka, Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media.
The politicians, who traveled to the UK for a “legislative capacity building” initiative, were treated to a dinner by Wike. Olayinka shared the details on X.com, highlighting the importance of the event for the lawmakers.
Wike departed Nigeria on Sunday after engaging with political allies in Port Harcourt. The lawmakers, headed by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, commenced their legislative tour in the UK last Friday. Amaewhule noted that the objective of the trip is to expose the members to international legislative practices and boost their overall effectiveness.
This visit unfolds in the context of significant political developments in Rivers State, where President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency on March 18. As part of this declaration, he suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu, and members of the House of Assembly. To oversee the state, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), a former Chief of Naval Staff, was appointed as the sole administrator for an initial six-month period.
The ongoing turmoil in Rivers State has emerged from a power struggle between current Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Wike.
