ABUJA, NIGERIA — Former Southampton and Royal Antwerp forward Victor Udoh has died at the age of 21, in a development that has sent shockwaves through the football community.
The Nigerian-born player was reportedly found dead in Abuja, where he had recently returned following the conclusion of the Czech domestic football season. Authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause of death, although early reports have described the circumstances as suspicious.
Southampton Football Club, where Udoh spent a brief period in the academy setup, expressed deep sorrow over his passing. The club said it was “devastated” and extended condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Royal Antwerp, another of his former clubs, also paid tribute, describing the news as a great loss and offering support to those close to the young forward.
Udoh began his European career with Belgian side Royal Antwerp after moving from Nigeria as a teenager. He quickly rose through the ranks, scoring 12 goals in 21 appearances for the club’s reserve side before making his senior debut at just 19.
In January 2025, he secured a move to Southampton on a three-and-a-half-year deal, featuring primarily for the club’s development squad. However, after struggling to break into the first team, he departed later that year by mutual consent.
He subsequently joined Czech second-division side Dynamo České Budějovice, where he continued his professional career prior to his untimely death.
Widely regarded as a promising talent, Udoh’s sudden passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans, teammates, and clubs across Europe and Nigeria.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are ongoing.
