The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has declared a nationwide strike sparking fears of a looming fuel scarcity.
This was disclosed by the President of the association, Mr. Festus Osifo, who said the action follows the expiration of a 7-day ultimatum given to the government.
Mr. Osifo explained that the industrial action is due to the inability of the Federal Government to address the issues raised by the Oil and Gas workers.
Speaking on the development, Mr. Osifo said:
“As at today, members of PENGASSAN are on strike. Another issue asides the ones written on the letter on October 22nd, is also the Issue of Baker Hughes. Baker Hughes is a service company in the Oil and Gas industry who deliberately decided to destroy PENGASSAN.
Mr. Osifo went ahead to lament that Baker Hughes had literally sacked all its PENGASSAN executive members that are employed in the company and also locked out its members for a very long time.
The President noted that PENGASSAN has the interest of Nigerians at heart and that is why it has been discussing this subject for over six years without taking any stringent action knowing what may be the impact of the strike on the average Nigerians.
However, called on the relevant government agencies to commence engagement immediately so that the subject can be put to rest. He said government has the capacity and will to resolve the issues and it was important for them to do so in order not to put Nigerians in any form of hardship.
