The announcement was made in a statement on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa. Governor Yusuf shared the news during a reception and Iftar gathering held in honor of the returning scholars, who pursued their education at Symbiosis International University in Pune, India.

Governor Yusuf assured the graduates that their placement within the Kano State Civil Service had been finalized. “Your appointment letters will be issued soon through the Ministry of Health and the Head of Service,” he confirmed. He also noted that the newly implemented state minimum wage of N71,000 would apply to them, alongside enhanced allowances aimed at fostering a better working environment for healthcare professionals.

Governor’s Call for Commitment to Kano’s Healthcare System

Expressing concerns over scholarship beneficiaries opting to work outside the state, Governor Yusuf urged the graduates to remain in Kano and contribute to its healthcare sector. “It is disheartening to see government-sponsored students seeking employment elsewhere instead of using their expertise to uplift our healthcare system,” he remarked. He specifically called on them to address pressing health challenges, including maternal mortality and sickle cell anemia, particularly affecting women and children.

Governor Yusuf emphasized that investing in education and healthcare was a crucial part of his administration’s strategy to improve service delivery in Kano. Retaining skilled professionals, he added, was essential to achieving these goals.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to continuing the foreign scholarship initiative introduced by former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso. He highlighted that, under the program, 418 students were sent to study in India and Uganda last year. While all have now completed their programs, 68 more students currently in India are expected to return by April.

Among the 54 newly employed graduates are 36 medical doctors, 11 pharmacists, two anatomists, and one radiographer. According to the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Scholarship Board, Kabiru Getso, some of the specialized courses studied by the graduates are unprecedented in Kano and northern Nigeria, marking a significant advancement in the region’s healthcare sector.

“With this achievement, Kano is well-positioned to enhance its healthcare services,” Getso said, adding that all returning scholars excelled in their studies, completing their programs with outstanding grades.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Dr. Yusuf Abubakar conveyed appreciation to the Kano State government for the life-changing opportunity. “We are deeply grateful for this support. Words alone cannot express our appreciation,” he said.
