Tears flowed on Friday, May 17, in Uwala Abaka village, Ukehe town, Igbo-Etiti local government area of Enugu State, as actor John Odonwodo, known as Junior Pope, was laid to rest.
The burial rites began with a lying-in-state at his father’s compound, allowing family, friends, colleagues, and well-wishers to pay their last respects.
Following this, the body was transported to St. Peter’s Catholic Parish in Ukehe for a commendation mass. By 1:30 PM, the remains were moved to a private location for the interment.
The ceremony was filled with grief as colleagues and fans gathered to honor the late actor. His wife, Jennifer Awele, was seen weeping uncontrollably as the final funeral procession began.
Junior Pope, who died in a tragic boat accident, was remembered with a heartfelt service celebrating his life, work, and the joy he brought to his audience. At St. Peter’s Catholic Parish, mourners shared memories of his warmth, talent, and dedication, highlighting his significant contributions to Nigerian cinema.
The 43-year-old actor passed away on April 10, alongside four others, when their boat capsized on the Anam River in Anambra State, returning from a film shoot.
Veteran actress Rita Edochie expressed her deep sorrow at the news of his death during the ceremony. Among the dignitaries present was Chief Nnia Nwodo, former president general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, who also hailed from the town.
