I Didn’t Know My Father - Charly Boy Opens Up
Charly Boy Opens Up About His Complicated Relationship with Late Father, Supreme Court Justice

In a recent interview on the “With Chude” podcast, Nigerian singer and activist, Charly Boy, shared a candid account of his strained relationship with his late father, Chukwudifu Oputa, a former Supreme Court Justice. Despite the tension, Charly Boy revealed that he had a profound impact on his upbringing and learned valuable lessons from his father’s traits.

Charly Boy‘s rebellious nature began at home, where he questioned his father’s strict rules and authority. “I was the kid who wouldn’t do what I was told to do,” Charly Boy said. “My father forgot that he was the one who planted that seed in my head, always telling us to query and investigate everything. So, I had this constant vocal battle with him.”

Charly Boy acknowledged that their personalities clashed, leading to a lack of understanding and bonding between them. However, as they grew older, they began to appreciate each other’s unique qualities. Despite their differences, Charly Boy recognized the importance of his father’s influence on his life.

“I didn’t understand his methodology, and he didn’t think I was a good kid,” Charly Boy admitted. “But as we got older, we started to see the beauty of our personalities. We didn’t agree on anything, but I realized that this didn’t enable me to bond with my father. He didn’t know who I was, and I didn’t know who the hell he was.”

The experience has shaped Charly Boy’s perspective on life and has informed his activism. By sharing his story, he hopes to inspire others to embrace their individuality and find common ground with those who may seem different.

As Charly Boy continues to advocate for social change, he remains grateful for the lessons he learned from his father’s complicated relationship with him.
