Musician Portable Surrenders to Lagos SCID Following Ogun State Warrant

Lagos, Nigeria – Controversial musician Habeeb Okikiola, known as Portable, has turned himself in to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Yaba, Lagos, confirmed the Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday. The move comes after Portable was declared wanted by the Ogun State Police in relation to an alleged assault on government officials.

Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin verified the development, clarifying Portable’s current status. The singer’s surrender follows a period of evasion after he was initially called in for questioning in Ogun State.

The situation escalated when Portable allegedly failed to comply with police requests to address accusations of attacking officials from the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

Prior to his surrender, Portable posted a video online, suggesting he was undergoing treatment at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, claiming he was a “madman”. This followed the Ogun State Police’s declaration of him as a wanted individual. However, the police dismissed his claims, insisting he remained a person of interest in connection to the alleged assault.

Omolola Odutola, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), emphasized that Portable needed to face investigation. “Portable will come and submit himself… He is a wanted man,” she stated.

The incident that triggered the police investigation occurred during an enforcement exercise at Oke-Osa, Tigbo Ilu Ota, Ogun State. Three officials from the Ministry, TPL Onabanjo Abidemi, TPL Raymond Lateef, and TPL Ridwan Oyero Akinlesi, were reportedly attacked. According to their account, they first encountered Portable’s father, who said the singer was unavailable. Shortly after, Portable arrived on the scene and, accompanied by nine others, allegedly assaulted the unarmed officials.

While the officials sustained injuries, they were able to escape and report the incident to the Ota Area Command. The case was then transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

Following the incident, the police attempted to contact Portable through multiple invitations. However, he reportedly ignored these without providing any legal representation. Consequently, the Ogun State Police Command secured a court order declaring him wanted.

On Instagram, Portable attributed his troubles to his association with Senator Adeola Solomon, representing Ogun West. He also reiterated his mental health claims and treatment.

Damilare Oloyede, the Special Assistant on New Media to Senator Adeola, has distanced the lawmaker from Portable’s legal problems. Oloyede stated, “Portable should be responsible… Senator Yayi won’t help him in this predicament.” He characterized the issue as a consequence of Portable’s behavior and stressed that Senator Yayi, a law-abiding public servant, does not tolerate irresponsible conduct.
