Nigerian actor and comedian, Woli Arole, found himself at the center of a social media storm following a controversial Instagram post addressing women’s safety on September 5, 2024.
Amid the ongoing outrage surrounding the abduction and murder of 300-level ABUAD student, Christianah Idowu, Arole’s message, intended to caution young women, was met with severe criticism.
In his now-deleted post, Arole wrote:
“Message to the LADIES: The devil is on a rampage against young ladies’ destinies… Ladies don’t fornicate around, don’t carry SUGAR DADDY, don’t follow one boyfriend away for a weekend, don’t date BOYS you know that are doing FRAUD!!! Be careful. Study your Bible, PRAY.”
Angry Instagram users slammed Arole for what they saw as victim-blaming, with many expressing frustration that the post put the onus on women to avoid danger rather than holding men accountable for violence against women.
One user remarked, “Women are being killed every day, and this is all you could come up with? Why not advise men to stop killing women?”
Another wrote, “It’s always advice for women. Why not address men and tell them to stop committing these atrocities?”
As the backlash grew, the actor deleted his post the next morning, but not before sparking a wider conversation on social media about the need to address perpetrators of violence rather than focusing solely on women’s behavior.
