In a remarkable display of youthful leadership, 12-year-old Aladetan Opeyemi has been sworn in as the one-day chairman of Oluyole Local Government Area in Oyo State.
Opeyemi, a student at Oyo State Comprehensive Model College, was joined by three peers in this unique initiative: 12-year-old Abdulrasaq Oladokun as Vice Chairman, 13-year-old Aluko Israel as Secretary, and 13-year-old Tijani Teslim as Leader of the House.
The appointments followed a school-based competition organized by the local government, where Opeyemi clinched the position of first runner-up.
The young leaders officially assumed their roles during a swearing-in ceremony at the Oluyole Local Government Secretariat. Their first task as “officials” included inspecting a newly completed Grade A Customary Court project in the area.
Promoting Academic Excellence and Responsible Leadership
Speaking about the initiative, Hon. Akeem Olatunji, Executive Chairman of Oluyole Local Government, said the programme was designed to reward academic excellence and inspire students to aim higher.
“This initiative aligns with our commitment to support Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration and emphasize the value of academic achievements over social vices such as promoting nudity on television or social media,”
Olatunji noted.
The chairman pledged to sustain the initiative throughout his tenure, expressing hope that future administrations would uphold the tradition of celebrating excellence in education.
The programme highlights the importance of fostering leadership skills among young students, marking a significant step in shaping future leaders in the state.
