A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted DCP Abba Kyari, the former commander of the Force Intelligence Response Team, a two-week bail period after 27 months in detention. The bail allows Kyari to conclude the burial rites of his mother, Yachilla Kyari. The court has scheduled the determination of his bail application for Friday, May 31, in his ongoing trial over drug-related charges brought by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. Kyari was arrested on February 14, 2022.
Yachilla Kyari passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024, and was buried according to Islamic rites the same day. She is survived by ten children, including Abba Kyari, her eldest son. Despite his inability to attend the burial, residents of Borno State paid their respects in large numbers.
In 2022, the Police Service Commission suspended Kyari and two senior police officers, ACP Sunday Ubua and ASP James Bawa, in connection with a cocaine deal. The PSC’s statement confirmed the suspension of Ubua and Bawa effective from February 14, 2022, citing their involvement in the drug-related case alongside Kyari.
