Abia State Government Engages Nsulu Clan Ahead of Proposed Airport Project

The Abia State Government has initiated community consultations to inform residents of Nsulu clan in Isialangwa North Local Government Area about the planned location of the new Abia Airport in their community. This announcement was made on Monday by Chief of Staff to Governor Alex Otti, Calab Ajagba, during a meeting with traditional rulers and representatives of various host communities at Eze Christopher Ebere’s palace in Umuomaita.

Ajagba revealed that prior discussions had taken place with village leaders, who have given their support for the project. He shared letters from community stakeholders expressing their acceptance of the airport project along with their requests, as well as a communique from clan representatives endorsing the initiative, which attendees acknowledged as having been agreed upon by them.

“There is no opposition to the project among the leaders,” Ajagba stated, explaining that this forum was designed to prepare community members for an upcoming government delegation set to meet separately with each community starting December 10, 2024. He noted that the government is currently clearing the site and will determine property ownership to ensure proper compensation before construction begins.

Ajagba emphasized the project’s economic potential for the Nsulu clan, which could create job opportunities for local youth, improve road infrastructure, and enhance access to reliable electricity and other essential services. He encouraged the residents not to overlook the development opportunities presented by Governor Alex Otti’s airport initiative.

He also addressed recent protests by some women in the community, describing them as unnecessary and politically motivated, and reassured the host communities of the governor’s sincere commitment to their development.

During the meeting, several traditional rulers, including Eze Christopher Ebere and Eze Patrick Anaba, affirmed the government’s previous outreach efforts. They expressed no desire to hinder the development of the Nsulu clan, highlighting their understanding of the importance of an airport for their community and rejecting claims of bribery or land sales to the government. They urged their fellow representatives to effectively relay this message to the wider community.

Community representatives, such as Charles Ohia and women’s leader Mrs. Priscila Okugo, also voiced their approval of the airport project while expressing concern over the communication barriers that some local representatives faced. They pledged their support for the initiative and stressed the importance of accurate information dissemination regarding the project.
