Atiku Abubakar Criticizes Military Honors Granted to President Tinubu’s Son
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has voiced strong objections to the military honors presented to Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, labeling it a disrespect to Nigeria’s established military customs. He has called for an immediate probe into the incident, which he deems a significant breach of protocol.
In a statement issued by his media office on Sunday and signed by his media adviser Paul Ibe, Atiku condemned a video that surfaced, showcasing Seyi Tinubu receiving a formal military salute from a group known as the “Nigeria Cadet Network.” Atiku stated that such ceremonial honors should be reserved for official public figures and criticized the group for potentially undermining the esteemed traditions of the Armed Forces.
Atiku raised questions regarding the legitimacy of the “Nigeria Cadet Network,” noting that initial investigations suggest it is not an authorized organization within the Nigerian military structure. He expressed serious concerns about the group’s display of firearms, especially in light of Nigeria’s ongoing struggles with illegal arms trafficking.
The former Vice President outlined three critical areas for investigation: the validity of the “Nigeria Cadet Network,” the legality surrounding the firearms used in the parade, and the appropriateness of bestowing military honors on a private individual. He emphasized the necessity of upholding the integrity of the Nigerian Armed Forces to maintain public confidence. “Should any laws have been violated, it is imperative that security agencies ensure accountability,” Atiku remarked.
The incident has ignited public backlash, with critics accusing the government of politicizing military traditions.
