The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Muhammed has expressed his gratitude to the Federal Government for its donation of 70 trucks of assorted fertilizers to farmers in the state.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mohammad Auwal Jatau, at the inauguration of a committee for the distribution of fertilisers, hailed the gesture as a significant step towards supporting farmers at the grassroots level.
The committee, which is responsible for distributing the fertilisers to eligible farmers, was tasked with coming up with criteria for selecting genuine farmers and farmers’ associations across the state. The governor emphasized the importance of ensuring fair distribution of the fertilisers to the benefiting farmers.
In addition to the fertiliser donation, the Bauchi State Government has taken several initiatives to boost agricultural production in the state. The government has embarked on the sale of NPK fertilisers at a subsidised rate of N20,000 per bag for the 2024 farming season. The government has also distributed various agricultural equipment and tools to eligible farmers, including 20 units of tractors, 94 rice milling machines, and 47 groundnut decorticating machines.
The governor highlighted the state government’s efforts to support farmers, including a community revolving fund that has provided financial assistance to 10 communities. Each beneficiary received a cheque worth USD $25,000, making a total of $250,000 through the state’s ACReSAL Funds.
The Bauchi State Government has prioritized agriculture as a key sector in its economic development plan, and is planning to acquire heavy-duty agricultural equipment to raise the level of agricultural production and ensure food security in the state.
Governor Mohammed emphasized that despite the challenges faced by the state government, it has accorded agriculture the priority it deserves. He urged the committee to work diligently to ensure that the fertilisers are distributed fairly and efficiently, and to submit a report within three weeks.
In related news, the Dangote refinery fertilizer unit is said to have resumed after being shut down due to some challenges affecting the crude oil refinery.
