Nigerian Cardiologist Dies by Suicide After U.S. Court Orders Him to Pay $15K Monthly Child Support Amid Divorce Battle
A 36-year-old Nigerian cardiologist, Dr. Ikenna Erinne, has died by suicide after a U.S. court ordered him to pay $15,000 (approximately ₦23 million) in monthly child support to his ex-wife.
Divorce Battle And Tragic End
Dr. Erinne, originally from Anambra State, had been entangled in a prolonged divorce and custody battle. The court’s ruling, which reportedly left him financially drained, was cited as a key factor leading to his death on Sunday, January 26.
Nigerian-American Clayton Udo, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), lamented what he described as the legal system’s harsh impact on African men in the U.S.
“The abuse of African men in the USA must end. Dr. Ikenna Erinne, an American-trained cardiologist, allegedly took his own life after being ordered to pay his ex-wife $15,000 monthly. He had already spent thousands of dollars in legal fees before the ruling,”
Udo wrote.
Legal Struggles and Career Fallout
Udo further alleged that Dr. Erinne lost his medical license amid the legal battle, compounding his distress.
“He spent thousands of dollars in legal fees—wasted money. This process impoverishes you. He lost his license as a cardiologist, then was slammed with a $15,000 monthly payment and restricted access to his children,”
Udo stated.
Community Mourns a ‘Compassionate Healer’
Obim Onujiogu, another member of the Nigerian-American community, confirmed Dr. Erinne’s passing, describing him as a dedicated doctor and family man.
The funeral service is scheduled for Monday, February 3, 2025, at Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home in Elkridge, Maryland, with interment to follow at Meadowridge Memorial Park.
Dr. Erinne is survived by his children, Ugonna and Munachi, his parents, Engr. Chris and Mrs. Chinwe Erinne, and his siblings.
His tragic death has sparked discussions about the financial and emotional toll of divorce proceedings on men, particularly in the U.S. legal system.
