Massive Blaze at Lagos Idumota Spare Parts Market Leads to Millions in Losses, No Casualties Reported

Lagos – A devastating fire outbreak at a spare parts market in the Idumota area of Lagos State has resulted in the destruction of property valued in the millions of naira. The incident occurred on Friday night, as confirmed by Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), in a statement released on Saturday.

Oke-Osanyintolu reported that initial investigations indicated that several buildings utilized as shops for automobile spare parts were engulfed in flames. According to the statement, emergency responders received distress calls via the 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency Lines around 10:20 PM. In response, LASEMA deployed its Emergency Response Teams from Lekki, Cappa, and the Command and Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.

Upon arrival at the scene by 10:55 PM, the response teams found multiple structures consumed by the fire. The cause of the outbreak remains undetermined at this time, although preliminary assessments suggest that properties and merchandise worth hundreds of millions of naira were lost in the blaze.

The situation saw collaboration between various emergency units, including the LASEMA Shark Response Team, the LASEMA Fire Unit, the LASEMA Tiger Response Team, and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, alongside the Federal Fire Service. Their collective efforts were directed towards controlling the fire and preventing it from spreading to adjacent buildings.

Law enforcement agencies were also present, implementing crowd control measures to ensure safety at the site. Fortunately, Oke-Osanyintolu reported that there were no casualties or injuries resulting from the incident.

Efforts to extinguish remaining pockets of fire, referred to as “dampening down,” have begun, and salvage operations for valuable assets within the affected shops are currently underway. Ongoing operations aim to fully eradicate the fire and complete recovery efforts.
