The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has called on the federal government to take immediate action to address the country’s economic woes and alleviate the suffering of its citizens.
The bishops, led by President Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, made the appeal during a recent ordination ceremony in Owerri, Imo State.
Speaking during the ceremony, Archbishop Ugorji lamented the dire poverty situation in the country, citing the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira as major contributing factors. He emphasized that the government’s actions have led to a decline in the purchasing power of citizens, making it difficult for them to access basic necessities.
“Poverty is not just about lack of food, but also about lack of access to what you need to survive each day,” Archbishop Ugorji said. “When food is available, it is not affordable. This is a multi-dimensional problem that requires a holistic approach.”
The CBCN President also expressed concern over the recent wave of protests across the country, which he said has claimed lives and resulted in significant property damage. He urged the government to listen to the concerns of the protesters and take concrete steps to address their grievances.
“It is time for the government to listen to what the people are saying,” Archbishop Ugorji said. “The protesters are not just marching on the streets; they are engaging in actions that speak louder than words. The government should take heed of their cries and work towards finding solutions.”
The CBCN President also took a critical look at the government’s economic policies, describing the floating of the naira as a devaluation of the currency. He urged the government to reconsider its policies and prioritize the welfare of its citizens.
“Government should rely on the prevailing amount of rising prices of everything needed for living,” Archbishop Ugorji said. “This is not just about economics; it is about human dignity and life.”
The Catholic bishops’ call for action comes as Nigerians continue to grapple with rising prices, fuel scarcity, and other economic challenges. The bishops’ appeal has sparked renewed debate about the need for urgent economic reforms and greater accountability from government leaders.
