Covenant University Tops Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025

Covenant University has once again achieved the prestigious title of the highest-ranking university in Nigeria, as announced in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2025. This esteemed recognition positions the Ota-based institution ahead of its Nigerian counterparts, solidifying its reputation as a leader in the realm of higher education.

The comprehensive ranking evaluated 1,907 universities from 108 countries, taking into account 18 performance indicators across five key categories: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook. Covenant University outshined other prominent Nigerian universities, including Ahmadu Bello University, Landmark University, and the University of Ibadan, which secured the second, third, and fourth positions, respectively.

The 2025 rankings also highlighted a transformative shift in the global higher education landscape. With an analysis of over 134 million citations derived from 16.5 million research publications, insights were gathered through survey responses from upwards of 68,000 scholars worldwide.

In addition to Covenant University’s remarkable achievement, several other Nigerian institutions were recognized within the top ten. The University of Lagos ranked fifth, followed by Bayero University in sixth, Federal University of Technology, Akure in seventh, Federal University of Technology, Minna in eighth, and the University of Benin in ninth. The University of Ilorin rounded out the top ten.
