The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident, attributing the violence to a cult-related clash.
Anambra, Nigeria – A violent attack in Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, has left several people dead on Sunday, following a suspected clash between rival cult groups.
The assailants reportedly stormed Oye Nwochichi market, near Nibo old maternity, in a brown Lexus 300 Jeep on Sunday afternoon and opened fire on the victims. Eyewitnesses claim the attackers then proceeded to Eke Nibo Market, where they continued shooting, causing additional casualties.
While the official number of deaths is yet to be confirmed, local sources report that at least 10 bodies have been recovered so far.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident, attributing the violence to a cult-related clash.
In a statement, police spokesperson SP Ikenga Tochukwu disclosed that the State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered the deployment of more officers to the area in response to the attack.
“The Command is aware of a suspected cult-related clash that occurred on 20/10/2024 in Nibo, Awka South LGA. The Commissioner of Police has mandated the immediate deployment of additional operatives to the area for necessary action,” Tochukwu said.
He urged witnesses to come forward with any information that could help apprehend the culprits, assuring the public that all reports will be handled confidentially.
