EFCC Cleares Fauziya Danjuma Goje of Naira Abuse Allegations Following Viral Wedding Video

Abuja, Nigeria – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) issued a statement on Monday refuting claims of currency abuse involving Fauziya Danjuma Goje, daughter of Senator Danjuma Goje. The clarification comes after a viral video surfaced showing naira notes being liberally sprayed at a wedding in Kano on Friday, October 24, 2024, leading many to mistakenly associate the incident with Goje’s wedding.

In a statement released by Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, it was confirmed that the video, while depicting a clear instance of naira misuse, did not originate from Fauziya Goje’s wedding. Instead, the event captured in the video was the wedding reception of Amina Babagana Zannah, whose mother is the well-known entrepreneur Hajara Seidu Haruna, also recognized as Hafsat Gold Nigeria, the owner of Hafsat Jewellery Enterprise with locations in Abuja, Kano, and Dubai.

The EFCC’s statement explained, “Our attention has been drawn to a widely circulated video showing naira being freely sprayed at a wedding in Kano on October 24, 2024. Following this, allegations were made against Mrs. Fauziya Danjuma Goje by various individuals, including commentary from a prominent national newspaper.”

Citing its role as an anti-corruption body dedicated to combating currency abuse and the dollarization of the Nigerian economy, the EFCC investigated the video promptly. Findings indicated that while the incident of naira misuse was evident, it was unrelated to Goje’s daughter.

In the statement, Oyewale noted, “Hajara Seidu Haruna confirmed that the video was recorded at her daughter Amina’s wedding dinner, asserting the authenticity of the footage.” He elaborated that the groom, Ibrahim Mohammad, hails from Niger Republic, and the individuals who allegedly engaged in spraying currency were associated with the groom’s family.

The EFCC has since summoned groom Mohammad and others involved in the incident for further questioning at its national headquarters in Abuja. Oyewale emphasized the agency’s commitment to addressing instances of currency abuse while also protecting individuals from wrongful accusations. He reassured the public of the EFCC’s unwavering dedication to its mission, stating, “The Commission appreciates the awareness generated by its campaigns against currency abuse throughout the country and is determined to enforce accountability for all offenders, irrespective of their status.”
