The Enugu State Police Command has announced a significant breakthrough in its efforts to combat criminal activities in the state. According to a statement released by the command’s spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, two members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), a security outfit associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), were killed during a raid on their camp.

The operation, conducted by operatives of the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad, took place in the early hours of March 30, 2024, in the Akwuke community of Enugu South Local Government Area. The raid, guided by intelligence, was part of the Easter crime prevention strategies devised by the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu.

Upon approaching the camp, the operatives encountered resistance from the ESN members, who opened fire. However, the police team responded with superior firepower, neutralizing two of the criminal elements. The remaining assailants managed to flee the scene, some with gunshot wounds.

The successful operation resulted in the recovery of significant weaponry and ammunition. Among the items seized were an AK-47 rifle, a submachine gun (SMG), and a stainless pump-action gun (PAG). Additionally, the police recovered 27 live rounds and 23 expended rounds of 7.62 mm caliber ammunition. Five live cartridges and a small blue-colored Gideon New Testament bible, used to conceal objects suspected to be charms, were also confiscated.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the breech number of the recovered AK-47 rifle had been wiped off. Furthermore, it was discovered that the criminal elements were responsible for several attacks and the theft of police officers’ rifles. This conclusion was drawn from the fact that the rifle’s magazine bore the colors of the Nigeria Police Force. The police have launched further discreet investigations into the matter.

The Commissioner of Police commended the operatives for their operational feat and reiterated the command’s unwavering commitment to rid Enugu State of unrepentant criminals. He urged the public to continue supporting the police and encouraged individuals, especially owners of medical facilities, to report anyone found with gunshot wounds to the authorities.

The elimination of the ESN members represents a significant blow to criminal activities in Enugu State. It underscores the dedication of the police force to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of residents. The successful raid serves as a warning to criminal elements operating within the state that law enforcement agencies will not hesitate to take decisive action to uphold peace and security.
