The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially appointed Finidi George as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, as announced on Monday via a statement on the federation’s official website.

The decision to appoint George was approved by the NFF Board following a recommendation from its Technical and Development Committee. George, a former ace winger, previously served as an assistant to former coach Jose Peseiro for a duration of 20 months before assuming interim leadership of the senior national team in March.

During his interim tenure, George guided the Super Eagles through two friendly matches against Ghana and Mali, both held in Morocco. The team achieved a significant victory in the first match against Ghana, breaking an 18-year winless streak against the Black Stars with a 2-1 triumph. However, the subsequent game against Mali resulted in a 0-2 loss for the team.

George, a prominent figure from Nigeria’s revered ‘Golden Generation,’ boasts an impressive football career. He notably contributed to Nigeria’s success in clinching the Africa Cup of Nations title in 1994 and represented the country in the FIFA World Cup finals of the same year. Nigeria emerged as the second most entertaining side in their debut appearance at the World Cup.

With 62 caps for Nigeria, George’s illustrious career spans multiple tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and AFCON, where he garnered gold, silver, and bronze medals across various editions from 1992 to 2002. His appointment as the head coach of the Super Eagles marks a significant milestone in Nigerian football, with expectations high for his leadership and guidance of the national team.
