Fire Outbreak at Murtala Muhammed International Airport Prompts Flight Diversions

Fire Outbreak at Murtala Muhammed International Airport

Flight operations at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos have been redirected to the D Wing following a fire incident at the facility. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) took swift action in response to the emergency, with efforts underway to assess the extent of the damage and ensure the safety of passengers and airport personnel.

The fire outbreak occurred early on Thursday morning at the E54 Passenger Air Bridge within the domestic wing of the airport. According to Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the incident was reported at 5:29 a.m. local time.

Upon detection of smoke emanating from the E54 Bridge, airport authorities promptly deactivated power to the entire E Wing, as a precautionary measure. The Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) swiftly mobilized to the scene, arriving within minutes of the alarm. Initial assessments suggest that sparks from an electrical unit may have ignited the fire, although a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the exact cause.

The ARFFS team worked diligently to contain the fire, successfully bringing it under control by 6:41 a.m. Concurrently, efforts to ventilate the affected area and clear the building of smoke are ongoing to ensure the safety and well-being of airport users.

In light of the incident, all flight operations at Terminal 1 of MMIA have been diverted to the D Wing to minimize disruptions and facilitate passenger movement. FAAN assures the public that alternative arrangements are in place to manage the situation efficiently while prioritizing the safety and security of all stakeholders.

The swift response of airport authorities and emergency services personnel underscores the importance of robust contingency plans and rapid intervention protocols in mitigating potential hazards. FAAN remains committed to upholding stringent safety standards and implementing proactive measures to safeguard airport facilities and infrastructure.

As investigations continue into the cause of the fire, FAAN pledges transparency and accountability in providing updates to the public. Measures will be taken to address any identified vulnerabilities and prevent similar incidents in the future, including potential enhancements to electrical safety protocols and infrastructure maintenance practices.

Passengers and airport users are advised to stay informed through official channels and adhere to instructions from airport staff and authorities. FAAN reassures travelers that every effort is being made to minimize inconvenience and ensure the uninterrupted flow of air travel operations.

The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of emergencies and the critical importance of preparedness and vigilance in maintaining the safety and security of vital transportation hubs. FAAN remains vigilant in its commitment to providing safe and reliable airport services, and will continue to work closely with relevant stakeholders to address emerging challenges and enhance resilience in the face of adversity.
