A high-level delegation from the German government and business community has expressed its eagerness to strengthen economic cooperation with Enugu State, particularly in the areas of agriculture, energy, trade, and investment.
The German Consul General, Mr. Weert Börner, led the delegation on a working visit to Governor Peter Mbah at Government House, Enugu. Börner revealed that the visit was a continuation of discussions that began in Lagos in 2023, aimed at increasing German cooperation with Enugu State.
Enugu State was chosen as one of three business and investment destinations in southern Nigeria due to its improved ease-of-doing-business environment under the Dr. Peter Mbah Administration. The state’s affirmation by the Nigerian media and the German government’s findings also played a significant role in the selection.
The governor thanked the Germans for choosing Enugu State as one of their economic partners, emphasizing that his administration is ready and willing to partner with German government and businesses. Mbah reiterated that the state’s ambitious target of growing its economy to $30 billion in seven years is achievable through private sector investments and international cooperation.
The governor assured the German delegation of massive opportunities in agriculture, energy, trade, and investment. He highlighted the state’s plans to develop its agricultural sector beyond food security, including the establishment of Special Agro Processing Zones to meet local consumption and export demands.
Enugu State has also acquired 300,000 hectares of land to attract commercial farmers and is seeking partnerships in the development of the livestock industry. The state has also embarked on an aggressive development of road infrastructure to facilitate access to farmlands and evacuation of farm produce and processed products.
The governor urged the German delegation to take advantage of the state’s extensive work in institutional strengthening, progressive policies, and improved regulations in the electricity sector through partnership and investment.
