Sokoto State Governor Rolls Out Major Subsidy on Rice Sale to Support Grassroots Amid Economic Challenges

In a bid to alleviate the rising cost of living, Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has launched the sale of subsidised food items, including a 50kg bag of rice at ₦38,700. The initiative, unveiled on Wednesday in Kware town, is aimed at providing relief to residents, particularly those at the grassroots level.

Aliyu announced that the state government approved a 55% subsidy on each bag of rice, ensuring the sale is accessible to all residents, regardless of political affiliation or social status.

“A 50kg bag will go for ₦38,700, while a 25kg bag will cost ₦19,350, and the 10kg bag will be available for ₦7,740,” the governor stated, adding that smaller quantities will also be available for those unable to afford the larger bags.

The state has already allocated ₦14.488 billion towards procuring 280 trailers of rice, with each ward receiving 600 bags. Funds raised from the sales will be reinvested into the purchase of more food items, ensuring the sustainability of the program.

Governor Aliyu credited former Governor Aliyu Wamakko for his support and affirmed that strict measures are in place to ensure the initiative benefits those in need.

Residents can now purchase the subsidised rice at designated centres across Sokoto’s 242 wards, following the official launch.

The initiative, overseen by a state-appointed committee, aims to combat the economic strain caused by soaring food prices across Nigeria.
