Call for Compassion: Jewish Priests Highlight Nnamdi Kanu’s Health Crisis and Appeal To Tinubu For National Unity
Jewish priests from the Unique Forum of Orthodox Judaism have written an open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling for the immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The group believes his release will help restore peace in Nigeria’s South East region, where tensions have been rising over his continued detention.
Kanu, who has been in solitary confinement at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja since 2021, is facing deteriorating health conditions, according to his family. They have pleaded with the President to allow him access to proper medical care outside the detention center.
Led by Rosh Nasishemtov Ihe Madunweiheyah, the Jewish priests visited the Isiama Afaraukwu palace—home to Kanu’s late father—and held a prayer session for his release. They described Kanu as “unjustly detained,” arguing that his fight was for the well-being of his people, not a crime.
“We appeal to President Tinubu to release Kanu for peace to reign in this great nation,” the priests stated in their letter, urging the government to see him as a part of the solution to Nigeria’s challenges.
Princess Nnenne Kate Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu’s sister, expressed gratitude for the support and concern shown by the Jewish priests. She emphasized that her brother’s detention was not for personal gain but for seeking justice for the oppressed. She also voiced concern over his worsening health, urging the President to consider his release for proper medical attention.
The family echoed Kanu’s call for peace, stating that he does not condone violence in the South East but seeks to end attacks by armed herdsmen in the region. Kanu, they said, remains committed to the well-being of all Nigerians, regardless of tribe or religion.
