John Azuta-Mbata Elected President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide

John Azuta-Mbata, a former Senator representing the Rivers East constituency, has been elected as the new President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide. The election took place on January 10, 2025, at the Old Government Lodge in Enugu, where delegates from Rivers State unanimously nominated Azuta-Mbata for the prestigious position.

His election follows the zoning decision that allocated the role to Rivers State in light of the death of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who was representing Imo State at the time of his passing. Notably, Azuta-Mbata is the first Ikwerre native to serve as Senator for Rivers East under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.

In his acceptance address, Azuta-Mbata conveyed his appreciation for the trust bestowed upon him and emphasized his commitment to promoting unity among the Igbo people. He also indicated that addressing significant issues facing the Igbo community would be a priority during his tenure.

His election marks an important step toward enhancing inclusivity and regional representation within the Igbo-speaking population, as the organization seeks to navigate the challenges ahead.
