lagos flood: Minister Orders Drainage Clearance to Ease Traffic

A 10-hour downpour in Lagos and Ogun states has left many parts of the city submerged in floodwaters, disrupting daily activities and causing chaos. The flooding, which began on Wednesday, brought down a two-storey building in the Mushin area of Lagos, grounded vehicular movement on several roads, and left thousands of residents stranded.

The affected areas include Iyana-Oworo, Agege, Ijegun-Isheri Osun, Gbagada, and Lagos Island in Lagos State, as well as Eredo, Bojije, Epe, Sangotedo, Ibeju-Lekki, Awoyaya, Labora, and Abijon. However, according to the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olukorede Kesha, the flooding is not widespread and only affects localized sections of federal roads.

Despite this assertion, the Ministry of Works has taken immediate action to mitigate the situation by directing the desilting of drainages along federal roads to ease traffic flow. The ministry has deployed teams to assess the situation and clear debris from the affected areas.

The move is aimed at eliminating the disruptions caused by the flash floods and restoring normalcy to the city. The Minister of Works, David umahi has given a directive to ensure that all drains along federal roads are cleared to prevent further flooding.

Residents who were affected by the flooding have commended the government’s swift response to the situation and expressed hope that the measures taken will alleviate their suffering.
