A 38-year-old man who was shot and killed by gunmen suspected to be cultists at Rumukalagbor in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, Ndifreke Linus Savious Akpan has been scheduled for burial on December 7 in his home town in Akwa Ibom state.
Late Ndifreke Linus Akpan, popularly known as Fregene, who hails from Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state was on his way home after watching a football match on November 22, 2023 when gunmen who had been trailing him attacked and killed him.
Although, Akpan hails from Akwa Ibom State, he has resided in Port Harcourt for some years before his untimely death. He was well known amongst residents of the Rumukalagbor community in Port Harcourt.
His assailants shot him twice in the neck at a close range, and immediately fled the scene, leaving him in a pool of his blood.
A resident who spoke to Vanguard on condition of anonymity said, “Akpan’s body was just there on the ground after the cult boys left. Nobody could do anything because we don’t have guns like these boys.
“So there was confusion in the area, even people living around ran. The place that used to be very peaceful became something else. People were running helter-skelter to save themselves.”
A family member who spoke to our correspondent claimed Akpan was alleged to have stepped on the toes of a powerful kingpin the area who decided to eliminate him.
There has been a series of gun attacks leading to deaths in the city of Port Harcourt in recent times. Local police authorities said the killings were mostly related to armed robbery incidents.
