Calabar Court Remands Father for Allegedly Raping and Impregnating His 15-Year-Old Daughter

A Magistrate Court 1 in Calabar has ordered the detention of Mallam Adamu Ibrahim Umaru, 48, in prison for allegedly raping his 15-year-old daughter and causing her pregnancy.

Umaru, a resident of No. 27 Edem Odo Street in Calabar and originally from Bundugudu Local Government Area in Zamfara State, is accused of engaging in unlawful sexual acts with his daughter.

The decision to remand him was made by Chief Magistrate Mercy Ene after a hearing on an ex parte motion submitted by Police Prosecutor O. S. Umoren. The prosecutor stated that the motion was essential for ensuring that Umaru remains in custody until the investigation is completed. This request was grounded in Section 4 of the Police Act 2020 and the Cross River State Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2016.

Defense counsel Mohammed Shaibu opposed the motion, claiming that he had not been properly served with it prior to his client’s arraignment. Despite these objections, the Chief Magistrate approved the motion, which was supported by eight detailed paragraphs, and postponed the case until December 3.
