A middle-aged man identified as Babatunde has been apprehended by the Ekiti State Police Command for his involvement in stealing 7 phones targeting worship centers within the state. The arrest was made o Babatunde’s theft of seven phones from worshippers at the Christ Apostolic Church in Ayegbaju-Ekiti.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Sunday Abutu, the suspect confessed to carrying out similar thefts in churches across Oye and Ayegbaju communities, with plans to sell the stolen phones in Lagos.
Babatunde, posing as a member of the congregation, reportedly took advantage of the worship atmosphere to steal the phones unnoticed. Upon interrogation, he admitted to targeting churches such as the Redeemed Christian Church of God and New Reality Christian Center in Oye-Ekiti.
Investigations revealed that Babatunde would dispatch the stolen phones to Lagos via the motor park, where a friend would assist in selling them. The proceeds would then be sent back to him through online transfers.
The police have recovered the seven stolen phones from Babatunde, and some victims have positively identified him and their missing phones. Babatunde is set to face prosecution once investigations are concluded.
