The Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Ahmed Alkali, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transportation with Messrs MPH Rail Development (UK) Limited for the construction of a railway line linking Port Harcourt, Enugu, Calabar, and Abuja.

The MoU was signed in the presence of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Olufemi Oloruntola, the Director of Rail Development, Engr. Zirra Fimbarr, and the Director of Legal Services, Pius Oteh.

The event was held after the Infrastructure, Concession, and Regulatory Commission (ICRC) issued a compliance certificate and approval for the Outline Business Case of the project.

This clearance allows Messrs MPH Rail Development (UK) Limited to commence the production of the necessary documents for Federal Executive Council (FEC) approval, which would allow the project to proceed.

According to the statement, the project aims to connect Port Harcourt, Enugu, Calabar, and Abuja via a standard gauge rail line, which will be implemented through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, with no loans or debts incurred by the Nigerian government.

Minister Alkali expressed his support for the project and encouraged the company to prepare and submit all required documents for FEC approval as soon as possible.

The Port Harcourt-Enugu-Calabar-Abuja railway project is expected to bring tremendous economic benefits to the four states it will connect, including increased trade and commerce, improved connectivity, and job creation.

The railway line will also enhance the movement of people and goods within the four states, as well as reduce travel time and costs.

The project is seen as a vital infrastructure project that will boost socio-economic development in the region and contribute to the overall growth of the Nigerian economy.

It is also seen as an important component of the Federal Government’s efforts to revitalize the country’s rail sector and provide more efficient and cost-effective transport options for Nigerians.

There is much optimism about the project’s ability to deliver on its goals and bring significant benefits to the people of Nigeria. Minister Alkali’s commitment to ensuring its success is a positive sign that the project will be implemented effectively and efficiently.

Once completed, the Port Harcourt-Enugu-Calabar-Abuja railway line is expected to play a key role in Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure, with potential to boost intra- and inter-regional trade, facilitate trade with neighboring countries, and enhance the tourism potential of the region.

With these benefits in mind, it is clear that the project has the potential to transform the lives of Nigerians and contribute to the nation’s economic growth.

The people of Nigeria eagerly await the completion of this vital infrastructure project, which is seen as a catalyst for development and prosperity.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government is working hard to revitalize the rail sector and improve the transport infrastructure across the country. Recent efforts include the construction of the Lagos-Ibadan railway, the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano line, and the Lagos-Calabar railway, among others.

These projects are all aimed at improving connectivity and mobility, reducing travel time and costs, and boosting economic activity.

With such initiatives underway, there is a renewed sense of optimism in Nigeria that the transport sector is on a path of transformation and modernization.

It is hoped that these projects will help to improve the quality of life for Nigerians and create a more vibrant and efficient transport system that will serve the needs of the 21st century.

In addition to the rail sector, the Federal Government is also focused on improving road and air transport infrastructure. In recent months, there have been significant efforts to upgrade roads and bridges, as well as expand and modernize airports and other aviation facilities.

The goal is to create a more integrated and efficient transport network that will help to boost economic activity and facilitate trade and commerce.
