Kaduna Court Remands Woman for Allegedly Killing 8-Month-Old Daughter with Rat Poison
A chief magistrate’s court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, has remanded a 30-year-old woman, Mercy Michael, in a correctional facility for allegedly poisoning her eight-month-old daughter with rat poison. The incident reportedly occurred on December 10, and the baby died the following day.
According to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), which charged Michael with culpable homicide, the suspect fed her daughter rat poison without explanation. The baby was rushed to the General Hospital in Zonkwa but succumbed to her injuries.
The case was initially reported to the Salama Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Kafanchan, but it was later referred to the NSCDC for further investigation.
In court, the presiding judge, Mr. Samson Kwasu, did not take Michael’s plea due to lack of jurisdiction. Instead, he directed the prosecutor to forward the case file to the State Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.
The court has adjourned the case until December 17 for further mention.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving many stunned and seeking answers. The court’s decision to remand Michael pending further investigation is a step towards seeking justice for the young victim.
