NANS Demands Swift Action In Rescue of 20 Abducted Medical Students

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed deep concern over the abduction of over 20 medical and dental students, along with a House Officer, who were kidnapped while traveling to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) annual convention in Enugu.

According to a statement signed by NANS President, Pedro Obi, the students from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos were ambushed by gunmen in the Otukpo area of Benue State on August 15, 2024.

Obi has called on the Federal Government, the Nigerian Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and all relevant security agencies to take swift and decisive action to ensure the safe and immediate return of the abducted students.

“This incident is a devastating blow to the families and institutions involved, as well as a stark reminder of the worsening security situation across our nation,” Obi said. “As students, we are the future of Nigeria, and such an attack on us is an attack on the very future of this great nation.”

The NANS president emphasized the need for more robust and effective security measures across the country, stating that “we cannot continue to live in fear, where students and citizens are unsafe traveling within their own country.”

NANS has offered its full support to the affected families and is demanding immediate action and reassurance from the Federal Government that the safety of Nigerian students is a top priority. “The time to act is now. We stand in solidarity with the affected families and will not rest until our abducted colleagues are rescued,” Obi said.

The association has urged the government to take immediate action to ensure the safe return of the abducted students and to address the underlying security concerns that have led to this incident.
