Labour Union Rejects “Fraudulent” Electricity Tariff Reclassification, Accuses Government of Exploitation, and Threatens Nationwide Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a strong warning against the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) over its ongoing reclassification of electricity consumers, describing it as a deceptive move to impose higher tariffs.

In a communiqué signed by General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, the NLC rejected what it called the “forceful migration” of consumers from lower bands to Band A, which attracts higher electricity rates.

“Economic Violence Against Nigerians”

The labour union accused the government of systematic exploitation, stating that the Ministry of Power’s endorsement of the reclassification amounts to economic violence against the working class.

According to the communiqué, the ruling elite is deliberately worsening the plight of Nigerians through continuous tariff hikes, new taxes, and harsh economic policies.

“Whereas inflation has soared, wages remain stagnant, and the cost of living has become unbearable, the ruling class continues to transfer the burden of their fiscal irresponsibility onto the already impoverished working masses,” the statement read.

Nationwide Protest Looms

The NLC has vowed fierce resistance against any further electricity tariff hike, warning that it is ready to mobilize for a nationwide protest if the government and NERC proceed with the planned increase.

“The NLC shall not stand idly by while Nigerians are subjected to the unholy machinations of capitalist profiteers and their state collaborators,” the union asserted.

This comes amid rising concerns over the increasing cost of electricity, with many Nigerians already struggling under severe economic hardships.
