Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai Take to TikTok to Engage Nigerian Youth
Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party during the 2023 general election, has officially launched his TikTok account. He announced the creation of the page on his X handle on Tuesday, encouraging followers to join him in the vision of fostering a new Nigeria. In his introductory video, Obi stated, “This is my official and only TikTok page. Kindly join me towards building a new Nigeria that is possible.” Just one hour post-launch, his account had already attracted over 6,500 followers.
In a related development, just four days prior, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai also set up his TikTok page to share perspectives on Nigerian politics and promote his new party, the Social Democratic Party (SDP). In his announcement video, El-Rufai invited users to interact with him via videos, comments, and discussions concerning political matters. “This is my only and official TikTok page,” he asserted. “Please join me for videos, comments, and conversations on Nigerian politics, as well as the activities of our new party, the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Welcome on board.”
El-Rufai’s TikTok account gained rapid popularity, amassing over 200,000 followers within its first 24 hours. In his profile, he humorously labels himself as an “accidental public servant, certified ruffler of feathers, and deliberate SDP member.” His move to TikTok follows his recent departure from the All Progressives Congress and his transition to the Social Democratic Party.
