As political chaos in Rivers state continuous, below are curated updates from the Rivers State Assembly activities for the week by REPORT AFRIQUE’s correspondent in Port Harcourt.
Rivers Assembly Confirms New Commissioner
On Monday, July 8th, 2024, the Rivers State House of Assembly confirmed Barr. Emmanuel Onengiyeofori Frank-Fubara as the new Commissioner, following his nomination by Governor Sir Siminialayi Fubara.
Passes Bills to Boost Security & Disaster Response
The Assembly also approved two crucial bills: the Rivers State Transport Authority Reform Bill and the Rivers State Emergency Management Agency Bill.
The Transport Bill aims to tackle the “one chance” menace by profiling commercial vehicles for improved security, revenue generation, and coordinated service delivery.
The Emergency Management Bill, meanwhile, seeks to establish a state-level emergency response agency, mirroring NEMA, to effectively handle natural disasters, fire incidents, and other emergencies.
Speaker Rt. Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo commended the sponsors of the bills, Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Orubienimigha Adolphus Timothy and Leader of the House, Hon. Sokari Goodboy Sokari, emphasizing their timely and impactful nature. The House adjourned its session until Thursday, July 11th.
