Nigeria’s 2025 budget allocates N2.48 trillion to healthcare, aiming to revitalize hospitals and improve health services nationwide under Tinubu’s “Budget of Restoration.”

President Bola Tinubu has earmarked N2.48 trillion for healthcare in the proposed 2025 budget, which totals N47.9 trillion. This allocation represents 5.18% of the overall budget and reflects Tinubu’s vision under the “Budget of Restoration: Securing Peace, Rebuilding Prosperity,” presented to the National Assembly on December 18, 2024.

The healthcare allocation is aimed at bolstering Universal Health Coverage (UHC) initiatives, focusing on primary healthcare systems across the country. President Tinubu highlighted the government’s intent to improve health infrastructure and ensure wider access to quality medical care.

“In this way, we have allocated N402 billion for infrastructure investments in the health sector in the 2025 Budget and another N282.65 billion for the Basic Health Care Fund,” Tinubu disclosed.

This investment seeks to enhance the capacity of public healthcare facilities by ensuring access to essential medications and upgrading resources to meet the needs of Nigerians.

The budget prioritizes the revitalization of hospitals nationwide, including procurement and distribution of essential drugs. The administration aims to reduce reliance on imported medical supplies while enhancing local healthcare service delivery.

“Our hospitals will be revitalized with medication and better resources, ensuring quality care for all Nigerians,” Tinubu reassured during his presentation.

The 2025 healthcare budget marks an increase in absolute figures from N1.5 trillion in 2024, although its share of the total budget has slightly decreased from 5.46% in the previous year. Despite the upward trend in health spending, the allocation remains significantly below the 15% Abuja Declaration target, which African Union member states agreed to in 2001.

Broader Budget Allocations

Tinubu’s proposed budget also includes significant funding for other critical sectors:

  • Defense and Security: N4.91 trillion
  • Infrastructure: N4.06 trillion
  • Education: N3.52 trillion
