President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive banning members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) from purchasing petrol-powered vehicles. Instead, he has mandated that all government ministries, departments, and agencies procure vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG).
Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, announced the directive on Monday, emphasizing Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring energy security, enhancing utility, and reducing high fuel costs.
“The President’s directive aligns with Nigeria’s efforts to transition to cleaner energy. CNG-enabled vehicles are known for producing lower emissions and offering a more affordable energy alternative for Nigerians,” the statement read.
Addressing the FEC at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Tinubu emphasized the necessity of moving forward with energy reforms. “This country will not progress if we continue to stagnate. We have the determination to implement CNG adoption nationwide, and as public officials, we must lead by example. This commitment begins with us, and our seriousness will inspire Nigerians to follow,” Tinubu asserted.
The President also directed the rejection of any memos from FEC members requesting the purchase of traditional petrol-dependent vehicles, urging them to instead seek value-driven procurement of CNG-compliant vehicles.
Tinubu reiterated his commitment to leveraging Nigeria’s gas potential to alleviate high transportation costs and improve the standard of living for all Nigerians.
